Underground Together

Gallery Reception
November 06, 2008
6:00 to 9:00 pm

This exhibition coincides with the publication of a 208-page monograph by Chronicle Books, "Underground Together: The Life and Art of Harvey Dinnerstein." The book includes an introduction by Raman and Wendi and essays by Pete Hamill and Dr. Gabriel Weisberg.

"Underground Together" is one of the largest canvases Dinnerstein has ever completed, a profound reflection on the diversity of New York as depicted in a crowded subway scene. From Dinnerstein's drawings of The Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1956 to small and large oil and chalk pastels and over half a century of paintings, this exhibition attempts to give the visitor the broadest possible perspective on a life that has always been about art, from an artist who had the guts to stick to figurative and representational imagery when doing so was entirely out of vogue. The book and comprehensive exhibition will hopefully serve as a springboard for investigation for admirers of Dinnerstein’s art for decades to come.
