Unlike many galleries that deal broadly in the secondary market, the Frey Norris Gallery Annex is highly specialized. The Annex contains one of the finest collections of art associated with surrealism available for sale in the United States. Primary artists include Leonora Carrington (English/Mexican, 1917 – ), Wolfgang Paalen (Austrian, 1905 – 1959), Dorothea Tanning (American, 1910 – ) and Remedios Varo (Spanish/Mexican, 1908 – 1963).
Although these artists and a number of others are recognized for their immense talent in scores of books, catalogues and documentary films, and included in major museum collections around the world, they still represent an underappreciated segment of twentieth century art history.
The works for sale in the Annex, mostly paintings and works on paper, were created between 1924 and the 1970’s. Unique works on paper, objects and paintings by figures like Victor Brauner (Romanian, 1903 – 1966), Leonor Fini (Argentine/French, 1908 – 1996), Wilfredo Lam (Cuban, 1902 – 1982), Max Ernst (German, 1891 – 1976), Andre Masson (French 1896 – 1987), and Stella Snead (English, 1910 – 2005) are also available.
